1997 Alderney Golden Wedding Gold £25 Proof Coin

The 1997 Alderney gold £25 proof coin is gold sovereign size, and features Prince Charles' Investiture on its reverse.

History and Description

The Commonwealth Games of 1958, held in the Welsh capital, Cardiff, ended on July 28th with an announcement from the Queen that she intended to create her eldest son as Prince of Wales. Greeted by a chorus of Welsh approval the Queen continued that the nine-year-old Prince Charles would not be officially invested until, in the Queens' words, "he is grown up".
The spectacular event, held in Caernafon Castle on 1st July 1969, was the greatest ceremonial occasion since the Coronation. In a setting designed by Lord Snowdon, the Prince, dressed in picturesque robes, knelt before his mother in the middle of the huge medieval amphitheatre of the castle to receive from her his crown and to promise, in words reminiscent of his father's pledge at the Coronation, to "become your liege man of life and limb and of earthly worship".
To the delight of the crowds, the Prince made his address in Welsh, and in the succeeding years he has fulfilled the role as a royal representative for the Principality of Wales,
To mark the Golden Wedding Anniversary of the Queen and Prince Philip, the States Treasury of Alderney has issued a commemorative £25 coin. The reverse design, by John Savage, depicts the Prince of Wales with a shield in the foreground incorporating the Welsh Dragon and the year of the Investiture, 1969.
The obverse features Raphael Maklouf's exquisite portrait of the Queen.

Golden Wedding Series

For an occasion such as the Queen's Golden Wedding, a number of mints, central banks, and new issue coin marketing companies often get together and enter into a collaborative marketing exercise, so that any collector who wishes to collect commemorative coins relating to the Golden Wedding has a wide choice of coins in different metals, from a number of different states, including Commonwealth countries.
Often each country will choose a design which reflects a different aspect of the central theme.
