Massive Gold Coin Auctioned for 7.7 Million Yuan in Beijing
A 10-kilogram gold coin, the largest ever minted in China, has been auctioned for 7.70 million yuan (about 1.18 million U.S. dollars) at an auction in Beijing.
People's Daily, May 16, 2011

2.43 Times Bullion Value
We have seen a number of coins sell at record high prices during 2011 and other recent years.
What was surprising about the sale of this coin was its very high premium over intrinsic gold content, especially in view of the fact that it is a large gold bullion coin, rather than an old historic or numismatic rarity.
It sounds like there are some wealthy collectors and investors at large, and presumably the buyer, and most of the bidders for this coin were Chinese.
We would normally expect a ten-kilo gold bullion coin to sell for perhaps a 10% premium over its intrinsic gold content. This coin sold for almost 21/2 times its gold content. The average gold price in May 2011 was $1,511, making 10 kilos worth US $485,797; the coin sold for the equivalent of US $1.18 million!

Massive gold coin auctioned for 7.7 mln yuan in Beijing

A 10-kilogram gold coin, the largest ever minted in China, has been auctioned for 7.70 million yuan (about 1.18 million U.S. dollars) at an auction in Beijing.
The large coin was auctioned off by China Guardian Auctions Co., Ltd. after twenty-two rounds of bidding on Saturday. Minted in 2000, the coin is the heaviest gold coin minted ever since the Chinese government started minting gold and silver coins in 1949, said Guo Xueguang, manager with the philatelic items and coin department in Guardian Auctions.
The coin is 99.99 percent gold, with a par value of 30,000 yuan. It combines both traditional and modern markings, making it highly valuable for collectors, he said.
Gold and silver coins have become more popular in recent years for their surging prices and ability to resist inflation. A 5-kilogram commemorative coin issued by China was auctioned for 10.30 million yuan in Japan last April, said Guo.

Ten Kilo Gold Dragon Anyone?
For 2012, the Perth Mint in Western Australia, will be issuing Year of the Dragon coins as part of its popular and continuing series of Chinese Lunar Calendar coins.
We expect to be able to supply one kilo and ten kilo versions at no higher than a 10% premium. If the Chinese coin is an example, our coins may prove to be a great investment, besides being a great talking point and conversation piece.
