2015 Two Pound Coin - 800th Anniversary of the Magna Carta
2014 saw the release of a two pound coin to commemorate the 800th Anniversary of the Magna Carta. This is the third £2 coin released in 2015, the others being Definitive Britannia £2 and the Royal Navy First World War £2.
Magna Carta
The Magna Carta, or "The Great Charter of the Liberties of England" is a charter sealed under oath by King John, and it represents the rights of the average man.
King John fought and lost many battles in France during his reign. The English people were increasingly taxed in order to fund the battles, leading to much anger and resentment. Fed up with how people were being exploited, barons took over London, forcing King John to negotiate.
The Magna Carta was drawn up to give the average person rights and take away power from the King. It meant that king John had to follow the laws of the land. No-one could be arrested or imprisoned, without being judged by their equals, and/or the law of the land.
It was sealed in June, 1215, and is still, to this day, regarded as one of the most important documents in history - representing a move towards freedom for the average man. It also inspired other important documents like the United States Constitution.
Royal Mint Prices
We have always thought the gold proof two pounds are too expensive for us to purchase them direct from The Royal Mint. We pride ourselves on being able to sell coins at very reasonable and competitive prices. For this reason we only purchase these coins from the secondary market in order to give reasonable prices on collectable coins to our customers.
Obverse
The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of the Queen. It is the last time it will appear on the coin, as the new portrait was unveiled in 2015.
The legend (inscription) reads:
ELIZABETH II D G REG FID DEF

TWO POUNDS
Reverse - Quill Design Inaccuracy: Artistic License or Anachronism
The reverse of the coin was designed by experienced coinage artist, John Bergdahl, who was inspired by the medieval art at the time. It shows King John in the centre, clutching the Magna Carta and a quill, suggesting that he has, or is about to, sign the document. The inaccuracy is that the Magna Carta was in fact sealed by the King, not signed.
The legend (inscription) reads:
MAGNA CARTA
