The 1968 Summer Olympics were heaped with controversy. Several hundred demonstrators were killed near were the Olympics were held by the Mexican Army and Police shortly before the games opened, American atheletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos made a 'Black Power' salute at the winner's podium during the US national Anthem, and Czechoslovakian Gymnast Ve(ra C(áslavská made a similar political statement during the playing of the Soviet National anthem in protest at the Soviet invasion of her country that year.
