The Gold Trojan Original Name for the Krugerrand
We only realised in 2010, that the planned name for Krugerrands was Trojans, perhaps because they were to contain one Troy ounce.
According to the South Africa Mint:
A giant in the coin industry was conceived in 1964 when the concept of a legal tender gold coin linked to the daily gold price, was introduced in South Africa. This 1 oz, 22 carat gold coin was originally named “The Trojan”, but when the official striking took place on 3 July 1967 at the South African Mint in Pretoria, it was renamed THE KRUGERRAND.
The South African Coinage Act
In 1964 South Africa’s Minister of Finance announced the introduction of a 1 oz gold coin in Parliament. The South African Coinage Act was passed. The recommended name for this coin, “the Trojan” was changed to the Krugerrand in 1966.
Trojan Ounce - Troy Ounce - One Ounce of Gold
Perhaps the name Trojan was suggested because the coin was to contain one Troy ounce of gold.
Having been in the coin and bullion business, we have never called a Troy ounce a Trojan ounce. Sure, the word Trojan is an adjective describing something or somebody from Troy in Greece, but the Troy ounce used for precious metals gets its name because it was used in the French city of Troyes, so Troyenne or Troienne might be a better adjective.
Back in 1967
Krugerrands were first minted and issued in 1967, and have been produced every year since. They have legal tender status in South Africa, which allowed them to be imported into many, but not all, countries without import taxes, duty or VAT.
The Krugerrand Family
Originally only one size was issued, which contained one full troy ounce (31.1035 grams) of fine gold. This was originally known as a Krugerrand, or Kruger, for short. From 1980, three other sizes were introduced, namely a half, quarter, and tenth ounce size. Because of these, the original Krugerrand is sometimes referred to as a "full" or "one ounce" Kruger or Krugerrand, although within the trade, the word Kruger or Krugerrand is understood to be the full sized original one ounce version.
