Due to the popularity of the Krugerrand, a second gold collectors' coin, the PROTEA series was introduced by the South African Mint in 1986. The King Protea is portrayed on the obverse of the coin while the reverse themes change annually. Arthur Sutherland, chief die-sinker of the South African Mint modelled the popular design. In 1988 three different Protea coins were issued and the Protea Repens (Sugarbush), Surruria Florida (Blushing Bride) and Protea Multibraetaeta (Bearded Protea) were chosen.
Since the year 1989, the King Protea has appeared on the obverse of the Protea coin series. Initially, the coins were issued in 22 carat gold, but since 1997, the gold Protea coins have been issued in 24 carat gold. Important social issues have been portrayed on the reverse of these
popular coins since 1996. Protea coins are available in proof quality 1 oz and 1/10th oz pure gold as well as R1 sterling silver (1 oz). Like all proof coins, these artistic pieces have a limited yearly mintage and have become a much sought after series by international coin collectors
The first Protea coin was minted in 1986. Since 1999 the theme of these popular coins has paid tribute to various South African industries. The Mining Industry was the first theme in 1999, followed by the Wine Industry in 2000 and the Tourism Industry in 2001. As in the case of its predecessors, the 2002 Protea coins consists of 1 oz (R25) and 1/10 oz (R5) gold coins as well as a R1 crown size silver coin.

2002 - Two Themes
Two themes, namely Soccer and the World Summit on Sustainable Development, will be minted in 2002 on the Protea coin series'.
Theme - Soccer
THE DESIGN
One of South Africa's most popular sports - SOCCER - has been selected as the theme for the 2002 Protea coin series. This was done to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Bafana Bafana (South Africa's national soccer team) and recognise their qualification for the Soccer World Cup in 2002.
The obverse of all three coins portrays the King Protea, South Africa's national flower. The main design element on the reverse of the 1 oz gold coin is a soccer player striking a ball and that of the 1/10 oz coin is a soccer player heading a ball. The reverse design of the R1 silver coin portrays a goalkeeper in action. For the first time, the 2002 Protea gold coins will feature a denomination on the reverse.
ARTIST
Natanya van Niekerk - Marketing Manager and chief artist at the South African Mint designed the 2002 PROTEA series.
ENGRAVERS
The obverse design for the three coins was engraved by the South African Mint's chief die-engraver, Arthur Sutherland. South African Mint resident die-engravers, Aldrid Minnie, Mathinus Scheepers and Paul Botes engraved the reverse for the R25, R5 and R1 Protea coins.

Theme - World Summit on Sustainable Development
THE DESIGN
One of South Africa's key events for 2002 - The Johannesburg World Summit - has been selected as the theme for the 2002 Protea coin series. This was done to illustrate South Africa's significant role in the world's sustainable development agenda.
As in the case of its predecessors, the 2002 Protea coins consist of 1 oz (R25) and 1/10 oz (R5) gold coins as well as a R1 silver coin. The obverse of all three coins portrays the King Protea, South Africa's national flower. The main design element on the reverse of all three coins is planet earth with the African continent clearly visible. The words "Johannesburg World Summit" and the year "2002" also appear on the three coins. The 1 oz (R25) gold coin shows the word "prosperity", while the 1/10 oz (R5) coin displays the word "planet". The word "people" appears on the R1 silver coin. "Prosperity, Planet and People" is the official slogan for the 2002 World Summit.
The Johannesburg World Summit is a United Nations Convention at which delegates will review the progress made since the Earth Summit ten years ago in Rio de Janeiro. This Convention intends to shape the future direction of a globally defined sustainable development agenda. A shift in emphasis from purely environmental issues to the importance of sustainable social and economic development within the context of environmental stewardship will be the focus point for this international convention.
The South African Mint salutes all parties involved in sustainable development, poverty eradication, social development and environmental protection.
