Mexico Gold Coins

Mexican 10 Pesos
Obverse & Reverse
The obverse (commonly called the heads side) of most Mexican coins features an eagle on a cactus, while the reverse side, (commonly called the tails side) often has a more interesting, sometimes rather confusingly, a head, as on the Hidalgo 10 Pesos series which we feature on this page.

Miguel Hidalgo
Miguel Gregorio Antonio Ignacio Hidalgo y Costilla Gallaga Mondarte Villaseņor was born on 8th May 1753, and died on 30th July 1811. He was also known as Cura Hidalgo ("Priest Hidalgo"), was a Mexican Roman Catholic priest and revolutionary rebel leader, and is regarded as the founder of the Mexican War of Independence movement; who fought for independence against Spain in the early 19th century.

Ten Pesos
Although there were numerous earlier issues of diez (10) pesos, the Hidalgo type shown on this page was issued from 1905 to 1920 inclusive, although not in every year. It would seem that about 50,000 pieces were also struck in 1959, bearing that date, but from 1961 to 1972, approximately another million restrikes were also issued, and it is possible that they are still struck to order nowadays.
It is probably not possible to distinguish "original" 1959s from restrike 1959s.
In 1996, "matte" restrikes were also issued.
