Gold Coins of the Grand Duchy of Hesse (German Empire)
The Grand Duchy of Hesse was incorporated into the German Empire in 1871, colloquially, it was known as Hesse-Darmstadt (after its capital city, Darmstadt) in order to distinguish it from Hesse-Cassel (later Hesse-Nassau, a Prussian province).
The Grand Duchy did not have full territorial integrity, as its northern part, consisting of Upper-Hesse and Rhenish-Hesse, and the southern part, consisting of Starkenburg. The two pieces were divided by a corridor of territory belonging to Prussia.
Gold coins of Hesse tend to be much scarcer than their common Prussian equivalents, with mintages typically ranging within the tens of thousands, but never exceeding 521,000.
