French Gold 1 Franc Piedfort Coins
Brief French History
We give a brief history of France, and of French gold coins on our French Gold Coins page.
Piedforts
The Paris Mint, the Monnaie de Paris, has a tradition of issuing double weight coins, called piedforts, often in gold, for presentation purposes or for sale to collectors. The coin we feature on this page is one such coin. Krause refers to it as a piefort, but this may be an error or an Americanism.
We have shown the alloy as being .920 gold, but it may be only .900 we are not certain, but will attempt to find out.
The Mint issue price for piedforts is quite high, our price represents a bargain for the patient collector, at not much over bullion.
