Gold Histamenon Nomisma of Romanus III Argyrus
We show a Byzantine gold histamenon nomisma (solidus), of Emperor Romanus III Argyrus, 1028 - 1034.
Romanus III Argyrus came to the Imperial Throne late in life, being 60 years old when he began his reign. He was a well-meaning if somewhat inept ruler, personally leading a Byzantine Army against the Muslims at Aleppo, where he was suprised and defeated in battle. Although his generals managed to compensate for this defeat with a series of victories against the Saracens, Romanus personally was never forgiven for his military incompetance, and he was subjected to many plots against him for the remainder of his reign. He was eventually murdered on the orders of his estranged wife Zoe in 1034.
