2016 The Army - First World War Gold Proof Two Pound Coin
The Royal Mint have produced a £2 coin, honouring the Army in the First World War. This is the third £2 coin released in 2016. The other £2 coins issued in 2016 were the 350th Anniversary of the Great Fire of London and the 400th Anniversary of the Death of William Shakespeare.
The Army
As Britain prepared for war in 1914, Lord Kitchener's request for people to enlist drew an astonishing response. Families, neighbours and friends who enlisted together were able to fight side by side, in 'Pals Battalions'. They debuted this technique at the Battle of the Somme. The recruitment technique was successful, but the communities the Pals Battalions were recruited from were torn apart.
Royal Mint Prices
We have always thought the gold proof two pounds are too expensive for us to purchase them direct from The Royal Mint. We pride ourselves on being able to sell coins at very reasonable and competitive prices. For this reason we only purchase these coins from the secondary market in order to give reasonable prices on collectable coins to our customers.
Obverse
The obverse features the fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark.
The legend (inscription) reads:
ELIZABETH II D G REG FID DEF
TWO POUNDS
Reverse
This coin pays tribute to the comradery and community within the army during World War I. The reverse shows three of the 'Pals' shown side by side. The design was based on the work of the First World War artist C.R.W. Nevinson. The actual design comes from a creative consultancy called Uniform, led by the Creative Director, Tim Sharp.
The legend (inscription) reads:
THE FIRST WORLD WAR 1914 - 1918
