Queen Elizabeth II 90th BirthdayQueen Elizabeth II celebrates her ninetieth birthday on 21st April, 2016. She is the first British monarch to celebrate the milestone birthday. Reverse DesignThe coin was designed by the painter and sculptor, Christopher Hobbs. His mosaics have appeared in Westminster Cathedral. The design was inspired by the rose of England and The Queen's love of flowers. It shows nine roses, one for each decade of her life. Obverse DesignThe obverse of the coin shows the fifth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark. PresentationThe coin comes in a wooden presentation box and is issued with a certificate of authenticity. Multiple VersionsWe are stocking the uncirculated and silver proof versions of the coin. Crowns & Gold Five PoundsThere is a historical difference between gold crowns and gold five pound coins. Crowns were originally five shillings pieces worth a quarter of a pound. Five pound coins, as their name suggests, have a face value of five pounds. The first British crowns were gold coins issued in 1544, and the first silver crowns were issued in 1551. It was not until 1990 that the Royal Mint re-tariffed the crown - which was by then a silvery coloured cupro-nickel coin - from five shillings, to five pounds.
