2008 Pound Gold Proof 25th Anniversary Set

In 2008 the British Royal Mint issued a proof gold set containing 14 different £1 pound coins, one of of the designs used since 1983. We buy and sell all coins including gold proof pounds.
We are advised that the entire collection is already sold out at the Royal Mint.

2008 Dated

All fourteen coins in the collection are dated 2008.

Issue Limits & Mintage

Although all five of the designs from 2004 onward have been issued as gold proofs already, the coins in this new collection are all dated 2008, whereas the original versions bore their original date of issue. None of the designs issued before 2004 were issued as gold proofs, so the issue limit and mintage for these coins is low at only 150 pieces each. The 2008 Royal Arms gold proof has also been issued as part of the gold "Emblems of Britain" set, and may yet also be issued individually.

  • - Low issue limit of just 150 sets for worldwide distribution
  • - 22 carat gold coins each coin contains 8.7 grammes of pure gold
  • - Each coin struck to impeccable proof standard
  • - Beautifully displayed in a walnut-finish display case and accompanied by an informative booklet and numbered Certificate of Authenticity.

The Definitive £1 Coin

Representing the United Kingdom, the first modern £1 coin appropriately depicted Britain's pre-eminent heraldic symbol, the Royal Arms, Eric Sewell, former Chief Engraver at the Royal Mint, was "greatly honoured, highly delighted and totally surprised" to have won the competition for the reverse design in 1983.

The Royal Shield

In 1988 a further £1 coin representing the United Kingdom was struck, Derek Gorringe's design featured a fine depiction of the Royal Arms within a shield divided into four parts.

The Floral Series

The first series, designed by the distinguished silversmith Leslie Durbin, depicted stylised floral emblems relating to the four home nations of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The Heraldic Series

The reverse designs for the second series of four £1 coins were modelled by the acclaimed sculptor and experienced numismatic artist Norman Sillman. The theme was mainly heraldic.

The Bridge Series

The Bridge series of reverse designs was conceived by wood engraver Edwina Ellis. She was invited to take part in a limited competition and, abandoning the more traditional heraldic approach, she chose designs representing Britain's Industrial Heritage.

The Obverse Design

The obverse of each coin bears the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of the Queen, the 2008 year date on all coins and the edge inscription 'Elizabeth.II.D.G REG.F.D'

Superb Presentations

The set is housed in a high quality walnut-finish display case with a black velour display tray and smooth lid embossed with the Royal Mint logo. The case lid stores the accompanying informative booklet which incorporates a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
