In 2004 Germany issued a gold proof 100 euro coin to commemorate the City of Bamberg becoming a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. We could probably do no better than to quote from the city's website www.bamberg.de, in particular a page it has thoughtfully translated into English:-
World Heritage is of interest to us all and we are all responsible for its preservation.
In December 1993 the old town of Bamberg was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List and now ranks among the invaluable and irreplaceable property of all mankind.
While many other cultural monuments consist of only a single building, the World Cultural Heritage site of Bamberg is far more extensive and quite complex. It covers an area of 150 hectares and includes thousands of buildings. But the essence of Bamberg is not merely the surviving buildings with quite a few highlights like the cathedral and the old town hall. It is also the area in between. Even today we can still feel the early medieval atmosphere when we walk through the streets of the old town. It is everyone's duty to protect and preserve this, but especially that of the City of Bamberg and its citizens.
Let yourself be captivated by the atmosphere of the town and experience it in the lanes, in the gardens and parks, in the squares and at the water's edge. You will discover treasures which make our hard work worthwhile.
