2003 Australian Prospector Gold Nugget Proof
In 2001 Australia introduced a 'Prospector' series of proof gold nugget coins, marking the 150th anniversary of Australia'a first major gold find in 1851. The series runs for 5 years. The 2003 coin shown on this page is therefore the third in the series.
We occasionally get individual one ounce proof Prospector nuggets, and also complete sets of 5 coins, through the addition of a 1/20 ounce coin.
Description
The one ounce coins in the series all feature colour printed highlights in the design. The 2003 one ounce coin shows a scene of two prospectors and a camel in front of a tent. There are a number of barrels visible. Camels were imported into Australia. This is the third design in the Australian Prospector five year companion series of Proof Nugget coins, which celebrate the significance of gold in Australia's history.
The reverse design of the 2003 Australian Prospector coin, Canvas Town, is inspired by the many camps that sprang up to accommodate thousands of hopeful prospectors who descended on areas like Bendigo in Victoria and Kalgoorlie in Western Australia during the nineteenth century gold rushes.
The third coin in the companion series, it also shows a camel, many of which were introduced by Afghan immigrants during the period. These animals proved superbly adapted to the dry and dusty Wetern Australian goldfields, where they were used to transport essential supplies. The camel, together with several water tanks, is highlighted in colour.
Genuine Australian Natural Gold Nugget
The genuine Australian nugget included in this set is approximately 92% pure gold, and weighs about a quarter ounce. Nuggets in this form are found only near the Earth's surface, but are increasingly rare, with relatively few to be discovered.
