2001 Gold Victorian Era Five Pound Crown

Special Edition - Victorian Anniversary Collection

We describe the normal edition of this coin on our 2001 Victorian Era Gold Proof Crown page.
The coin we feature on this page is a special edition of the same coin, but with the frosted and matt areas of the coin reversed, compared with a normal proof coin, so that the flat background fields have a matt finish, while the raised parts of the design are highly polished. This arrangement is not universally popular with all collectors, most people prefer the "normal" proof finish, but we believe that more variety is better than less, and there are many people who would enjoy having both versions in their collection.

Complete Victorian Anniversary Collection

Unfortunately, this reverse frosted edition was only available to selected Royal Mint Coin club customers, and then only as part of a "collection", with the addition of a type set of four Victorian sovereigns. We feel it is rather autocratic of the Mint to deny collectors and dealers the opportunity to buy a particular new coin on its own, and to force potential customers to take a number of "old" coins, they may already have, or may not want. As most of our regular customers probably know, we are not afraid to criticise the Royal Mint when we disagree with its policies or dislike its design, but are quick to praise them when praise is warranted. Both are justified in this case, an attractive coin let down by greedy and shortsighted marketing.
Most marketing experts would probably admire the Mint's marketing, it certainly works. They managed to sell almost 750 of these sets, presumably direct to their own customers, but possibly also through a few large distributors. They undoubtedly managed this at their usual high price. we have notice that whenever the Mint sell second-hand coins, they do so at what appear to us to be very high prices. We suspect they sold the 4 sovereigns in this set at £50 each more than our price would have been.
