1999 USA Commemorative Gold $5 George Washington Commemorative Coins
America issued gold five dollar commemorative coins in 1999 for the 1799 Bicentennial of George Washington.
Gold Eagles
The USA is a relatively young country, and its first regular issue of gold coins started in 1795. Although most of them have an eagle as a major part of their design, for some reason the $10 piece acquired the name eagle, and the other sizes as double eagles, half eagles, and quarter eagles. The five dollar gold pieces are therefore known as half eagles.
There are also commemorative $5 eagles, first issued in 1986.
Be careful not to confuse them with the modern $25 half ounce gold bullion eagles. Both are called eagles. See also our circulation type gold eagles.
1799 - 1999 Bicentennial of George Washington
The USA issued gold commemorative five dollars in both proof and regular (non-proof) versions.
Both versions have the same design as shown.
