To celebrate the life of the Queen Mother, Guernsey has issued this £50 gold coin. Lady Elizabeth Bowes Lyon first came into the public gaze when she became engaged to Prince Albert in 1923. The newspapers predicted that the engagement would be a short one and this came true when, just three months after 'Bertie's' proposal, the couple were married at Westminster Abbey on 26th April. The Royal couple started on a life that they assumed would be a supporting role in the Royal Family. Prince Albert's brother came to the throne as Edward VIII, but his abdication in 1936 made Albert King. As George VI, he was unprepared for the role and Elizabeth's support was vital during this testing time. After the shock of Edward's abdication, the public were relieved to have this charming couple on the throne. They were very popular with their subjects and Queen Elizabeth's outgoing personality was combined with great strength of character. She was able to support her husband during the momentous world events to come.
