Few members of the Royal Family have enjoyed such popularity as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Born on 4 August 1900, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon was destined to become one of the most influential women of the twentieth century and, in tribute, the Royal Mint is proud to strike this commemorative gold coin on behalf of the Channel Island Guernsey. From 1923, when her royal life began as the newly married Duchess of York, the Queen Mother has spent a lifetime of extraordinary public service, including sixteen full and dramatic years as Queen Consort to King George VI, fulfilling that awesome task with natural grace and charm. Indeed her warmth and unwaverng sense of duty have won her the affection and respect of countless millions across the world. A formal portrait of the Queen Mother, modelled by Royal Mint engraver Robert Elderton, graces the reverse of the Guernsey gold fifty pound coin while the obverse features Ian Rank - Broadley's elegant portrait of her Majesty the Queen.
