1989 Gold 3 Coin Proof SetsThe designs used on all three coins in this set recreate those used on the very first gold sovereigns for Henry VII in 1489.The obverse features a majestic portrait of Queen Elizabeth seated facing on a throne. The reverse is a crowned shield within a Tudor double rose. The similar original sovereign designs continued in use through to Elizabeth I over a century later, and some James I gold coins still used a similar obverse up until 1619. Type CollectingThe designs used for the gold coins in 1989 were not used on any other coins, or in any other year, so this set becomes a "must" for type collectors.The Three CoinsThe three gold coins we refer to are, of course, the gold sovereign and half sovereign, along with the two pound coin, often called a double sovereign.ObverseThe obverse, or head side, shows the Queen seated facing on a throne. The majestic appearance of this design, combined with the large size, weight and purity of the original sovereigns, is the reason the new gold coin came to be called a sovereign in the first place.ReverseThe reverse design also mirrors its 500 year old original counterpart, bearing the Royal Arms surmounted on a crowned double Tudor rose.Specifications
