1961 Total Solar Eclipse Medallion
Produced by La Numismatica Ticinese, this medallion was issued to commemorate the total solar eclipse on February 15th, 1961.
Obverse
The obverse represents the sun and the earth, with the Italian inscription:
POST TENEBRAS LVX
ANNO GEOFISICO 1961
Reverse
We believe that the Sun God is represented on the reverse but whether this is Apollo or Helios we do not know. We are not sure what else is symbolised on the medallion but there was one suggestion in the office that the circular design at the bottom is the man in the moon! It also has the inscription:
ECLISSE TOTALE DEL SOLE
DEL XV FEBBRAIO MCMLXI
ITALIA
