XRD
XRD stands for X-Ray Diffraction, which is a relatively modern, high tech method of testing metals, including precious metals.
Originally, X-Ray equipment was expensive to buy and maintain. In recent years, small, hand-held or portable X-Ray ray devices have become available at more reasonable prices. They are unlikely to become consumer purchase items, as they still cost typically over £10,000 each, but at this pricing level, they are affordable for local coin dealers, and other buyers of gold and precious metals. We recently invested in a Niton desktop tester; one of the best things about it is the ability to detect, analyse, and quantify other elements in gold and other alloys.
