Copyright Theft
Perhaps we should be flattered by the number of people including dealers who continually infringe our IP (Intellectual Property) rights by using our copyright images, but we do not find it amusing, and will take legal action against any copyright thieves.

Scrap Gold Org Ampersat Internet Publishing Ltd (scrapgold.org.uk)
Scrap Gold Org Ampersat Internet Publishing Ltd (scrapgold.org.uk) of Keighley are just one of the many coin dealers & website operators worldwide who commit copyright theft by using our copyright images without our permission.
On many of their pages including the one we reproduce here, they are clearly using our 2004 Proof Krugerrand reverse image.

Copyright Abuse is Dishonest
Scrap Gold Org Ampersat Internet Publishing Ltd (scrapgold.org.uk) have a copyright notice at the bottom of all the pages of their website, so they are clearly aware of the concept of copyright, yet choose to use images they have stolen from us, a competitor, rather than pay a professional to take their own photos.

Who & Where are Scrap Gold Org?
We usually state the location of the sinners in our "Name & Shame" pages, however when we looked at Scrap Gold Org's website for this simple basic information, we found nothing. Sure there was a "Contact Us" link, but this was a one-way link, which simply opened your e-mail program with an e-mail address contact@scrapgold.org.uk.
We looked for an "About Us" page, and could not find one. Now we believe that any reasonable company should and does publish its contact and ownership details on its website, for a number of reason. Whenever we see a site without this information, or that makes it hard to find, we automatically treat it with suspicion. What have they got to hide?
We could find out more by paying for a search at Companies House, but this hardly inspires confidence.

What's Wrong?
We have invested considerable time, effort, money, and other resources into creating some of the best coin photographs on the internet. We employ a number of specialist photographers, currently two of them with three photography degrees between them. Even then, we have a perpetual backlog of items waiting to be photographed, processed, and added to our websites. It is therefore extremely annoying and frustrating to find competitors stealing our images to use in direct competition with us.
We note that their domain name was registered on 19th November 2008.
Our image appears on every single page of their website, incorporated into a simply logo with the words "Scrap Gold".
We believe our high quality photograph helps to enhance the overall appearance of their site. "Image" is very important in retailing and online business, as potential buyers will tend to trust sites which look to be professionally designed with attractive graphics.
Looking at the poor quality photographs on their goldsovereign.org.uk website, we can see why they chose to steal our photo!

Ad Farm
As far as we can tell, one of the main reasons for the scrapgold.org.uk website's existence is to make money for its owners via advertising. There appear to be a growing number of such sites, most of which contribute little or no original content, created by people with little or no experience or expertise, usually with no owner identity or contact details. In our opinion, most of these sites are worse than worthless, as they are often designed with SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) in mind, and merely act to divert viewers away from good quality specialist sites with original content, and dilute the overall quality of the web.
To add insult to injury, most of the content of these sites has been taken from the very sites they compete with, then regurgitated to disguise their origin, often stealing images from the same sites.
We feel these sites are more like parasites.

Scrap Gold - Advice on Selling Scrap Gold
ScrapGold.org.uk is an information website only. We do not buy scrap gold, we do not sell scrap gold, gold jewellery, gold coins, or any other form of precious metal.
We decided to set up this simple website to help save ordinary people from being ripped off by passing on our own experience of selling scrap gold and gold coins. Please feel free to read the information before selling your old gold, it might save you some money.
Check out our new Scam Alert Page!!!
Why Sell Old Gold and Scrap Gold?
Many people have old gold rings, earrings, gold necklaces, bangles, charms, pendants, broken gold chains, old gold watches or gold watch cases, or other items made from precious metals.
Often these pieces of gold jewellery or other items are out of fashion, are broken or worn, & not worth repairing. They sit in the bottom of drawers, forgotten, so you may wonder why anyone would want to buy them, & whether it's worth selling?
Well, the good news is that gold always retains it's value as a precious metal and any gold object can be melted down and then made into something else, even if it is just scrap gold in it's current form. Indeed this is exactly how it was when people used gold and silver coins.
In years gone by people who's businesses prospered would take gold or silver coins to the local goldsmith who would melt them down and turn them into useful objects - maybe cutlery, candlesticks, trays, etc. When times were harder those objects would be taken to the local mint, melted down, and turned back into coins.
This is exactly what happens today with scrap gold consisting of old gold jewellery, coins, and other gold items - a jeweller will buy the scrap gold, melt it down, and then use it to make something else.
Since gold & other precious metals always have value (although the value of precious metals is constantly fluctuating), it makes sense for a jeweller to buy old gold & re-use it.
Some people also buy scrap gold as an investment since they can buy it at very close to the official gold price (the spot price), without much, if any, premium - gold coins have a value to coin collectors, and so usually carry a premium above the gold spot price making scrap gold quite attractive to investors who think the price of gold is going up.
How do I Sell My Scrap Gold?
If you are needing to sell in a hurry then you will be best selling your scrap gold to a local jeweller, although they can offer quite poor prices, so beware. I once paid a big local jeweller to value a gold diamond solitaire engagement ring, and was told that it was worth around 1200. When I subsequently split up with my partner & took it back to the same jeweller, along with his own report, he offered me 80!
Probably the best way to sell your scrap gold quickly and to get a better price too is to use one of the online dealers, but again you must be careful since you will be posting your gold to someone you've never met & can't easily visit - how do you know who they really are?
We know one chap who bought 9000 of gold sovereigns from an accredited coin dealer, only to receive a load of junk in return for his money - including fake gold sovereigns - so be careful who you choose to send valuables to (see our Scrap Gold Dealers section), and always use recorded delivery, no matter who you think you are dealing with.
If you don't need to sell your scrap gold right away then you could always put it into an online auction like eBay. Online auctions always seem to realise a fair price, so long as you describe what you have accurately, including an accurate weight (with stones and other none gold fittings removed), take good clear photographs, and remember to take auction and paypal fees into account, then you should do okay.
How Much Will I Get for My Scrap Gold?
This is, if you'll excuse the pun, the 24 carat question. The price that you'll get for your scrap gold is determined by a number of factors, including whether your gold is 9ct, 14ct, 18ct, 22ct, or 24ct, what the current price of gold is, and of course how much the dealer in question is offering for different grades of gold.
In general you will find that dealers will offer you between 80% and 95% of the intrinsic value of the scrap gold, since they have to then incur costs while melting it down & reworking it. Perhaps this is why high street jewellers offer so much less for old gold, since they also have shop overheads to cover too.
You can give yourself a good indication of the value of your scrap gold using our scrap gold valuation page.
Value of Antique Gold & Antique Gold Objects
One final thought for this page is that if you have an antique made from gold, like maybe an old gold watch that has stopped working, a broken gold necklace, etc, it may well be worth considerably more than the scrap gold value.
If your antique gold object turns out to be have been made by a desirable maker like a Faberge or Cartier, or to be a rare example, then it's price may far exceed the gold content value, and it may be a very good idea to get it repaired.
You can get a good idea of the age of the item, and hopefully the maker by looking at the Hallmarks, which will tie it down exactly. There are lots of excellent websites that you can identify hallmarks on, and you could then research the maker before selling. If in doubt consult a good specialist antiques dealer first (that's not the guy in the local junk shop), they don't mind and you may get a better offer from them, and cash on the spot, than you'll get from a scrap gold merchant.

Org = Organisation?
The .org.uk domains are or were intended for use by non-commercial organisations. In the UK, this is not checked or policed by Nominet, which is somewhat regrettable as it allows individuals and companies to set up pseudo independent advice sites like scrapgold.org.uk.

Good Samaritans?...
The first paragraph of the scrapgold.org.uk home page states:

Scrap Gold - Advice on Selling Scrap Gold

...Or Charlatans?

Scrap Gold Dealers in the UK
Firstly it is important to say that ScrapGold.org.uk do not endorse any of the following companies, nor are we affiliated to them, we have merely put together a short list of companies that buy gold who we would feel comfortable recommending to anyone looking to sell their scrap gold.
As always you must look after your own interests first, so if you feel uncomfortable with any dealer that you speak to, you think that the offer sounds just that little bit too good, or anything else makes you suspicious, then you should stop & reconcile any concerns that you have before entering into any transaction.
If necessary go to a different dealer and work with someone that you feel happy with. Scrapgold.org.uk cannot accept any responsibility for losses or other problems arising from transactions between yourself & any scrap gold dealer.

What's Wrong With That?
This states that ScrapGold.org.uk does not endorse any of the following companies, nor are they affiliated to them...
We are happy to accept that the first two links appear to be independent of ScrapGold.org.uk, but the "Other Useful Gold & Silver Websites" section contains three links:

  • Gold Sovereign free information website to help buyers & sellers of gold sovereigns.
This link is to goldsovereign.org.uk which is registered to Ampersat Internet Publishing Ltd (the registration actually says Ampersat IP Ltd), the same as ScrapGold.org.uk.
The "Sell Gold Sovereigns & other Gold Coins" page of goldsovereign.org.uk says:
You can buy & sell gold sovereigns at our new sister site www.GoldSovereigns.org.uk
This link is to goldsovereigns.org.uk which is registered to Ampersat Internet Publishing Ltd (the registration actually says Ampersat IP Ltd), the same as ScrapGold.org.uk.
It is clear that Ampersat Internet Publishing Ltd are not telling the truth when they state "We do not buy scrap gold, we do not sell scrap gold, gold jewellery, gold coins, or any other form of precious metal." (Unless they changed their mind since, and conveniently forgot to mention it).

  • Silver Hallmarks Another free resource to help you identify & date your antique silver items.
This link is to silverhallmarks.org.uk which is registered to Ampersat Internet Publishing Ltd (the registration actually says Ampersat IP Ltd), the same as ScrapGold.org.uk.

  • Antique Silver A free to use website with information about antique silver items.
This link is to antiquesilver.org.uk which is registered to Ampersat Internet Publishing Ltd (the registration actually says Ampersat IP Ltd), the same as ScrapGold.org.uk.

Further Incestuous Relationships
Shortly after we created this page, we noticed Krugerrands.Org.Uk, aspects of which looked strangely familar to us. The two sites are identical in appearance, and use the same pirated photograph of our 2004 Krugerrand.
Krugerrands.org.uk contains the link "SEO by SEO Experts" after its copyright notice on each page.
It looks to us as though krugerrands.org.uk was set up by SEO Experts either on commission for its client Hatton Garden Metals, or else sold by SEO Experts to Hatton Garden Metals. In either case, the advice about them is hardly impartial, and the statement that Hatton Garden Metals is not endorsed by or affiliated to them is rather economical with the truth if not an outright dishonest. Some kind of client supplier relationship exists between them.
We note that krugerrands.org.uk was registered on 4th June 2009, just over six months after scrapgold.org.uk.
