Americans usually use the word karat instead of carat when referring to gold fineness (but carat when referring to diamond weight!). Because US manufacturers are legally allowed a 1/2 half carat tolerance, most U.S. scarp gold should be treated as 0.5 carst less than its declared standard.
The exception to US karat gold being subject to a tolerance is what is usually referred to as "plumb" gold. The denotes it as being exact, and not subject to tolerance, so 10kt "plumb gold really is (or should be) 10 carats. The word plumb in this context probably comes from plumb line meaning straight or precise. Its use is slightly amusing as plumb comes from the Latin plumbum meaning lead, the last thing one wants in a gold alloy.
Although we have listed the most common gold alloys, there are numerous other standards, and we are happy to buy all.
We are happy to buy any quantity of scrap, from a single piece upwards, without limit.
If you have a large quantity of gold scrap to sell, we will accept your instructions on price, or offer you helpful advice on selling. We are one of the longest established and largest gold buyers in Britain.
Fair and Competitive Prices
Our buying prices for gold coins, bars and scrap are fair and competitive, but depend and change based on underlying gold prices, and other market conditions such as supply and demand.
Typical rates are 98% on popular bullion coins and bars; 80% to 90%, and up to 95% on scrap gold jewellery.
We also frequently buy gold coins from many other countries. There is no import duty or tax on entry to the UK for most gold coins or bars.
