Rogues Gallery & Gold
Regency Coins Limited
We've just seen on the Cabinet Office website that 'rare' coin dealer Regency Coins (UK) Limited, has been taken to the High Court for conning its customers. The story has been picked up by a few newspapers and also features on The Daily Mirror's website.
We already knew about Regency coins and we started warning people back in June 2009. You might have seen our 'Rogues Gallery' where we mentioned that they had stolen several of images and passed them off as their own. We even warned people about them as far back as 2006, when some of the company members traded under a different name, Investors in Time Limited.
When we published the warnings we were threatened with legal action. Why did we persist? Well, the Cabinet Office report states that the company:-
1 - Sold coins at a much higher price than their true market value.
2 - Sold coins of a significantly lower quality than represented.
3 - Took orders for items they did not own and were not able to source.
4 - Sold the same items to more than one client.
5 - Retained coins and then sold them on behalf of the client but did not pay them any funds (leaving them with no coin or money).
6 - Took sums of money from client's bank accounts without agreeing with them first.
So why did we keep our pages in place? Our information was accurate, and in the public interest. Simply put, we don't like to see people being conned.
Several people who have unfortunately had dealings with the company have contacted us and we have heard a lot of horror stories including several customers being sent thousands of pounds worth of products that they didn't even order, together with a hefty invoice.
We don't use name and shame to knock our competitors. We do it to warn and protect people. Many of the investors that were taken advantage of were elderly and vulnerable. Hopefully our 'rogues gallery' played some part in preventing more people being cheated. We wish more dealers, and perhaps the BNTA, would take a pro-active approach in dealing with crooks.
If you have a story about either Regency Coins (UK) Limited or Investors in Time Limited, or anyone else for that matter, we would be happy to hear it.
