Palladium as an Investment
First the Bad News
Investment gold is exempt from VAT, for further information about investment gold please see our "What is Investment Gold" page. Palladium however is not exempt from VAT. Many people ask us why not. A better question would be "Why should it be?". Almost everything in the UK and EU is subject to VAT, although there are many exceptions. Perhaps because investment gold is now exempt, people think that all other metals such as silver, platinum, and palladium should also be exempt. Sadly this is not the case.
Some Good News
We do deal in palladium coins. As you are now looking at our "Tax Free Gold" website, you wouldn't expect to find palladium here, but you can find palladium coins at our original website. The first palladium coins were issued by Tonga in 1967. Portugal has also issued palladium coins.
Secondhand Palladium Coins
We also get a small number of second-hand palladium coins, both collectors' coins and bullion coins, although we get far more demand for them than we can supply. Most second-hand goods can be resold under a special scheme whereby the only VAT payable is on the dealers margin, and therefore almost negligible.
Canadian Palladium Maple Leaves
Starting in 2006, Canada has issued one ounce palladium maple leaf coins. We now have a small stock of these, and have them listed on our original website.
Historic Palladium Prices
We intend to add a table showing historic palladium prices. For the time being, we note that palladium twice hit a peak price of $1,115 US in January 2001.
