Henry VII Angel (First Reign 1485 - 1509)
Henry VII was the last, tenuous heir to the Lancaster Dynasty, who escaped to the continent in the face of Edward IV's final victory in 1471. Henry Tudor seemed destined to spend the rest of his life in exile, until Richard III, Edward IV's brother, made himself deeply unpopular by usurping and apparently murdering the young sons of Edward IV and usurping his nephew Edward V.
Landing in his native Wales, he gathered up an army and confronted Richard III at Bosworth, where he defeated and killed him in 1485. Henry went on to reign until 1509, carefully keeping England out of any further conflict (bar a few small Yorkist rebellions) and building up a full treasury, which he bequeathed to his son Henry VIII, who squandered it.
The Angel denomination depicted here was often used as a touchpiece in Royal touching ceremonies designed to cure people of Scrofula or 'the Kings Evil'. The coin was touched by the monarch, before it was pressed onto the affected area. Coins of this type are often found with holes punched into them for wearing as a pendant.
