French Gold 5 Franc Coins

Brief French History
We give a brief history of France, and of French gold coins on our French Gold Coins page.

Gold Five Francs
A small and very rare medallic issue of gold 5 franc coins were produced in 1803, year XI, inder Napoleon Bonaparte as First Consul.
There were also various other rare medallic issues including Louis XVIII, and Charles Philippe later Charles X, between 1814 and 1832.
Apart from these, the first regular circulation coinage of gold 5 francs started for Napoleon III from 1854 to 1869, and then for the Third Republic in 1878 and 1889.
In 1989, the Fifth Republic started issuing gold proof 5 francs as commemorative coins.

1995 United Nations 50th Anniversary - Organisation Des Nations Unies
This coin appears to be unlisted in Krause World Gold Coins. The obverse design is a stylised dove of peace holding an olive branch in its beak, standing on a globe inscribed with the date 1995. The legend or insciption is in two lines to the right of the main design:
LIBERTÉ EGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ
RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE
The reverse has the initials ONU in a "watermark" style, with the United Nations globe within laurel wreath symbol, and a large "50". The legend reads:
ORGANISATION DES NATIONS UNIES
1945 - 1995
