Caraçao
Curaçao is an Island in the Southern Caribbean off the coast of Venezuela. Formerly part of the Netherlands Antilles, it is an constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Its capital is Willemstad.
Brief Historical Notes on Curaçao
Curaçao apparently got its name from the Portugese word for cured (curado). Portugese sailors who visted the island were cured of scurvy due to the fresh fruit they ate which gave them the vitamin C they were lacking aboard their ships. In 1634 the Dutch arrived on Curaçao to set up a colony.
Curaçao became a centre for the transatlantic slave trade. In 1795 there was a major slave rebellion but this was brutily crushed.
During the Napoleonic Wars (1799-1815) the Britsh captured the island but later returned it. 1863 saw slavery abolished.
In 1914 oil was discovered on the island and as a result the 20th century saw an oil boom. Later the island developed a successful tourist industry.
As part of the Netherlands Antilles, in 1954 Curaçao obtained self governing status within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. To this day Curaçao remains a Dutch territory.
The currency of Curaçao is the Netherlands Antillean guilder. This is however due to be replaced by the Caribbean guilder.
