Christopher Columbus was a Genoese explorer who was charged by the King and Queen of Spain to sail around the world in 1492 in order to try and find a new route to India, instead, he discovered a new world in the Americas, although he did not realise this at first, and described the natives he encountered as 'Indians' (a name which stuck and which has only just begun to decline in popularity).

Columbus made several voyages to the New World, claiming new territories in the name of the Spanish Crown. His spell as governor of Hispaniola was dogged by controversy, and led to his temporary imprisonment back in Spain. Although he later regained his wealth and freedom, he was never again made a governor, and he died a somewhat disappointed (albeit extremely wealthy) man in 1506.
