2003 Guernsey The 17th Century of the Monarchy Gold Coin
In 2003, Guernsey issued a gold proof £5 crown sized coin to commemorate the 17th century of the monarchy.
According to the Royal Mint Certificate which accompanies this coin:
When Elizabeth I died in 1603 the monarchy passed to the son of Mary, Queen of Scots, James VI of Scotland who became James I of England. Whilst parliament was pleased to have a Protestant king, they soon found him to be an uncontrollable monarch. His son, who became Charles I in 1625, proved no better: believing in the 'Divine Right of Kings'. Charles famously entered Parliament with armed soldiers to arrest troublemakers. Civil War resulted and, with the defeat of the Royalists, Charles was executed. Oliver Cromwell imposed a Puritan rule from 1649 until his death in 1658. The monarchy was resurrected by Parliament in 1660 and Charles II ruled until 1685 when his brother became James II. James brought the spectre of a Catholic succession, which alarmed Parliament. They allowed the Protestant Prince William of Orange to invade England and James fled to raise an army. This landed in Ireland and met William's troops at the Battle of the Boyne. James was defeated and William and Mary came to the English Throne in 1689. Their subserviant rule was the last one of the 17th century. William died in 1702 when his horse stumbled on a molehill and he was thrown to the ground.
