At first sight of the design we didn't like it, probably because of the strange colour of the photo we received from the Royal Mint, but it has now grown on us, and we think it will be a popular design. Rather like the 1989 500th Anniversary sovereign, not everyone liked it at first because it did not feature the usual St. George and Dragon reverse, now it is one of the hardest of the recent proof sovereigns to find.Original News - 14th AugustWe were told earlier in the year that the Royal Mint were planning something different for the Britannias this year. We now have some details, although this information is unofficial at this stage. There will be a newly designed portrayal of Britannia. One source described this to as as having a standing Britannia leaning on a shield, and being in art deco style, another said it reminded him of the Una and the Lion design on the 1839 Victoria gold five pounds. The reverse of the proof coins this year is expected to be a complete matt proof, but the obverse is expected to retain the normal proof design of a matt finish on the raised parts with a highly polished field (background). Asking the Royal Mint produced the reply that no information was yet available. We will update this page whenever we receive further information or official confirmation.* Update 4th SeptemberWe have confirmation that the above details are correct and we have seen illustrations, but we do not yet have access to high quality images.
