1995 Rugby World Cup One Ounce Gold Proof Protea Coin
The South African Mint issued a small number (406 pieces) of One Ounce gold proof "Protea" coins to commemorate the event being held in South Africa.
The obverse shows a rugby player sunning with a rugby ball. There are two repeats of the design disappearing into the distance. A rugby ball shown diagonally in a rectangular logo, with the date 1995 below it, appears to the left of the main design. The legend reads
1 OZ Au 999.9
The coat of arms of the Republic of South Africa, with "South Africa" in eight different languages in three concentric circles, each in three segments, the date making up the ninth sector:
ININGIZIMU AFRIKA (Zulu & Swati)

AFURIKA - TSHIPEMBE(Venda)
AFRIKA BORWA (Twsana)
AFRIKA - DZONGA (Tsonga)

1995 Rugby World Cup in South Africa
The 1995 Rugby World Cup was the third Rugby World Cup. This was rugby union event, as opposed to rugby league. It was hosted by South Africa, and had the distinction of being the first Rugby World Cup in which every match was held in one country. It was also the last major event of the sport's amateur era; two months after the World Cup final, the International Rugby Football Board (now the International Rugby Board) opened the sport to professionalism.
Nelson Mandela, wearing a Springbok rugby shirt and cap, presented the William Webb Ellis Cup to South African captain Francois Pienaar to the delight of the capacity crowd at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on 24 June 1995.
The Protea Series
The South African Mint produces a series of "Protea" coins, starting in 1986, in two different sizes, one ounce and tenth ounce.
Please see our separate page of South Africa Protea Information, which contains history and specifications.
All of the Protea series have relatively low mintage figures, which often enhances their attraction for collectors, and also for their "second-hand" value.
Protea or Not Protea?
A number of the coins in the protea series do not feature a protea anywhere in their design or inscription, but the South African Mint describe them as belonging to the protea series. There is also an "Ounce" or "One Ounce" coin which preceeded the Proteas in 1985.
We have recently acquired a small quantity of Protea proofs, and are able to offer these at a considerable saving compared with the original issue price. If you are interested in a proof Protea coin, we suggest you buy now while these prices are still available.
