In February 1979, the government of Canada authorized the Royal Canadian Mint to establish a special coin programme and, on 5th september, 1979, the Gold Maple Leaf was introduced. This set of four commemorative proof coins celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Maple Leaf's entry into the market.

Proof Gold Maple Sets
The first time we bought a gold proof maple leaf set was only in July 2004. Before that we had been asked for them, but had never seen one. Once we owned one, we checked it in the Krause catalogue, which is never quick and easy for proof sets, and found it hard to believe that the Royal Canadian Mint have only issued proof gold maple sets in one year, 1989.
Quite why they implement this policy, we don't know, but policymakers at world mints seem to make their own decisions about what collectors will want. It is not our business to try to influence their decisions, merely to make a market in coins of almost every description.
At least it makes it easy to know which dates we do or don't have in stock!
They were issued in plastic capsules within a wooden box, which we believe is in maple wood.

The obverse of the Maple Leaf features the effigy of the Queen with the legend:

The design of the reverse by artist Walter Ott depicts a Canadian Maple leaf with the inscriptions:

Lacquered Wooden Box
The box appears to be a very attractive wooden box with an oriental lacquer finish. If by some chance it is plastic, then it has us completely fooled!
