1984 Los Angeles Olympics USA Commemorative Gold $10 Coins

Gold Eagles

The USA is a relatively young country, and its first regular issue of gold coins started in 1795. Although most of them have an eagle as a major part of their design, for some reason the $10 piece acquired the name eagle, and the other sizes as double eagles, half eagles, and quarter eagles. The ten dollar gold pieces are therefore known as eagles or gold eagles.
There are also commemorative $10 eagles, first issued in 1984.
Be careful not to confuse them with the modern $50 one ounce gold bullion eagles. Both are called eagles. See also our circulation type gold eagles.

1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games

The USA issued gold commemorative eagles for the XXIII (23rd) Olympiad, which was held in Los Angeles, California in 1984.
Proof versions were issued by al four current mints, Denver Colorado, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Westpoint New York. The Westpoint Mint also issued a normal uncirculated (non-proof) version. All coins have the same design as shown.
