1966 Battle of Hastings 900th Anniversary Medallion

This impressive gold medal or medallion was issued to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings in 1066. It was issued in two different sizes, each of which was struck in both gold and silver, by Spink & Son of London.
These medallions usually come in a fitted leather box.

Obverse

A portrait of William the Conqueror, enthroned, seated on a simple stool, beneath two decorated arches, supported by four columns. The legend which appears on the broad raised rim, reads:
WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR
900TH ANNIVERSARY
The engravers signature "COLLINGE" appears vertically to the right of the stool leg.

Reverse

A map or view of the English Channel, showing four sailing ships (galleys). To the North is shown Hasting and Pevensey, to the South, Normandy, Bayeux and Rouen are marked.
The legend reads:
THE LAST INVASION OF BRITAIN
10 66
THE BATTLE OF HASTINGS

Edge

The edge is plain, apart from a serial number, 372 on our featured specimen, and a London hallmark with date letter k, the maker's or sponsor's mark S & Sn.

Diameter = Diameter in millimetres.
Weight = Gross weight in grams.
Fineness = Alloy = millesimal fineness, and carats.
Gold Content = Fine gold content in troy ounces.
* Issue Limit. Although the issue limit is stated as 300 pieces of each medallion, several specimens we have seen bear number higher than 300! We assume there is a perfectly logical and valid reason for this, and do believe that the issue limit is correct, but the numbering system itself was rather quirky.

Diameters

We note that Fearon quotes the diameters of these medallions as 58 and 40mms, whereas we have measured them at 57 and 38mms.
