1821 King George IV Coronation Gold Medallion
The medallion we feature on this page is the official medallion, struck by the Royal Mint.
The coin has been struck in high relief and was engraved the Chief Engraver at the Royal Mint, Benedetto Pistrucci, who is best known for his engraving of the famous St. George slaying the dragon sovereign reverse.
According to Daniel Fearon, there were 1060 of these issued, we suspect only half still survive.
Obverse
The obverse features the laureate head portrait of George IV facing left, with the inscription:
GEORGIUS IIII DG BRITANNIARUM REX FD
Reverse
The reverse depicts three female figures, representing Britannia, Scotia and Hibernia (England, Scotland & Ireland) and a winged figure, Peace, offering the crown to George IV on a throne, with the inscription:
PROPRIO JAM JURI ANIMO PATERNO (Now in His Own Right with His Father's Mind) - INAUGURATUS DIE JULII XIX ANNO MDCCCXXI
(Inaugurated July 19, 1821).
